Petrucci, Harwood, Herring, Madura. Tenth Edition (available in bookstore) Recommended: Tenth Edition Solution Manual (available in bookstore) Petrucci website for the tenth edition of the textbook at http://www.prenhall.com/petrucci Petrucci website for the ninth edition of the textbook at http://cwx.prenhall.com/petrucci Course Webpage: http://mytulane.blackboard.com (Blackboard system). The CHEMISTRY 1070-30 class site is accessible through the Blackboard system. The Blackboard course site will contain continuing announcements and documents relating to the course. Slides used in the lecture will be available on blackboard for download after the lecture. The Blackboard site also has a grade book. This allows Blackboard to be the “official” record of test grades. Blackboard is only used for reporting raw point scores, but not for determining letter grades. Learning Objectives: 1. General familiarity with the main concepts in chemistry: atoms, compounds, chemical reactions, electronic structure of atoms and molecules, chemical thermodynamics. 2. The ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 3. Learned how to think critically and analyze chemical problems. 4. The ability to work independently. 5. Developed thinking skills. Course Material: The materials and examples presented in lecture are the major points of interest that will constitute the “official” body of material that may be on exams. In general this presentation will be fairly close to the same topics and lines of discussion as presented in Petrucci. The text is
