DESCARTES PAPER IS DUE BY NOON ON TUESDAY. DO ON MONDAY!! DON’T DO THE 6 TH PART OF THE PROMPT 1 st meditation - trying to find a foundation for knowledge. Explain how he does this and how he doubts away everything. 2 nd meditation - 3 rd meditation – discussion on nature of knowledge - Proof god exists 4 th – if god is perfect and he made me, how can I make an error? If god were perfect he would not allow me to make an error Goal of med 2: Can I find something that is not susceptible to doubt? Is there something I know for certain? Discovers that he is a thinking thing on top of pg.18 - The fact that he is able to doubt, and he is able to be tricked proves that he exists. It does not explain WHAT he is, but his existence is proven. - Bottom of pg.18 à what did I used to think I was? A man. What is a man? A rational animal à that is FALSE. In order to think of rational animals one must first think of animals. Since we do not know that animals even exist, this can no longer be true.
