Democratic Deliberation C222 January 29, 2009 Reading Response #1 In his essay “At $4, Everybody Gets Rational”, Charles Krauthammer suggests a solution for lowering high gas prices that were previously at four dollars a gallon at the time of his article. He claims that if a federal tax on energy is initiated then fuel consumption will decrease and more money will stay in the U.S. thereby additionally enabling certain payroll taxes of U.S. citizens to be lowered. To support his claim he reasons mainly with refutation of prior behavior pertaining to oil handlings. He mocks ‘gas guzzlers’ and recalls Americas old ‘love affair with SUVS’, which helps with his argument in favor of fuel-efficient cars. He also dismisses America’s handlings with overseas tax standards, which indirectly promotes his proposal of federal taxation. He cleverly provides evidence throughout his essay with sets of questioning: “Want to wean us off oil? Be open and honest. The British are paying $8 a gallon for petrol. Goldman
