The article relates to this week’s class topic because it pinpoints Somalia as a failed state, and recognizes how this type of state falters in response to famine and tragedy. Peter Biles, the author of the article, argues that the drought was disastrous even by itself, but the due to current internal conflict and chaos that has been brought about by the failed state, the catastrophic effects have reached unprecedented heights. Political corruption and instability has prevented Somalia from being able to effectively cope with the disaster. Biles provides historical evidence of similar situations that have occurred in Somalia’s recent past to support his argument: famine occurred in 1973 during a coup
