Lecture 17 Digestive Hormones o Secretin Produced: small intestine in response to acidity of stomach Causes release of pancreatic enzymes o Gastrin Produced by cells in the stomach in response to meat Causes release of digestive enzymes in stomach o Thyroxin Produced by the Thyroid Gland Controlled by Thyroid Stimulating Hormone Controls metabolism DeSaix’s friend’s TSH levels are high so her thyroxin levels are low High TSH levels mean not enough thyroxin is being produced o Calcitonin Produced by the Thyroid Gland Controlled by Calcium levels in blood Inhibits release of Calcium from bone o Parathyroid Hormones Controlled by Calcium levels in blood Controls Calcium levels by causing release from bone o Insulin Controlled by Pancreas – islets of langerhans Controls sugar levels Converts glucose to glycogen o Glucagon Controlled by Pancreas – islets of langerhans Raises blood sugar Converts glycogen to glucose
