Joseph So http://books.google.com/books? “Pocket Calculator shows Lighting Cost” May 1938 This particular article describes a new invention at the time, the pocket calculator. It continues to address how lighting salesman to quickly and efficiently show buyers how much money they were losing with their current light bulbs used this new use of analog computers. This particular pocket calculator is described to function through a series of stationary and sliding scales. http://books.google.com/books? “Lightning Strikes Mathematics” This article describes a revolutionary development of the 40s the world’s first all electronic computer. Led by Dr. John W. Mauchly and J Presper Eckert Jr, the development of the Eniac (electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) was projected to, “put mathematics back into industry as an economical, rapid tool, saving months of figure work and accomplishing part of the impossible.” Some of the innovations that the Eniac made possible were things like the plane, rocket or wing in which a passenger may travel well over 1000 miles. According to the article, the Eniac is 1000 times faster than its processor computer. Housed in a 30-by 50-foot room, the Eniac can add two 10-digit numbers faster than a man can write 1/5000 of a second. In order to use the Eniac a mathematician must set up the equation and detail exactly what needs to be done, because the machine only does what it is told. With the development of this new super calculator, the magazine outlines its optimism for the future of technology in every field. http://books.google.com/books?
