Escobar Bacteria ( Escherichia coli ) Yeast ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae ) Prokaryote - The word prokaryote comes from the Greek - (pro-) "before" + (karyon) " nut or kernel ", referring to the cell nucleus. Eukaryote - The presence of a nucleus gives eukaryotes their name, which comes from the Greek (eu, "good", "noble" & "true") and (karyon, "nut" & "kernel"). 1 chromosome (diploid/haploid N/A) Diploid/Haploid life cycle 1 circular chromosome (generally) Haploid #: 16 linear chromosomes DNA = nucleoid DNA in nucleus Single-celled organism Single-celled organism Cell membrane(s) and peptidoglycan cell wall Cell membrane/carbohydrate cell wall Cell wall synthesizing enzymes + -lactamase (generally) No -lactamase Cells divide by binary fission Some species divide by binary fission and others by budding.
