Les articles Think about the difference between “a(n)” and “the”. When to use « le, la, les » ? = articles définis - To refer to a category, something general, a broad field (when, in English, you have no article) > ex. la musique, le rock’n’roll, l’art ( = le + art > ellipsis due to vowel ), la science, le sport, le théâtre, la lecture, la télévision ( in general ), le bleu/le blanc/le vert, le vin, les voyages, la nourriture, le dessin, les mathématiques…. - To make a general statement : ex. “j’aime le rock”, “j’aime le hip-hop”, “je n’aime pas le sport” (in English, you have no article) - To refer to something that you have mentioned earlier in the discussion (you use “the” in English) - To refer to something/someone that everyone knows : ex. “le président des Etats- Unis”, “la Maison Blanche”, “la France”… - To talk about something specific in a specific situation . Ex. “fermez la porte” ( the door is here, everyone can see it
