Emily Leung March 24 th , 2011 Weekly Journal #7 TA: Peter Kaminski This week in lecture we learned about sustainability and mental models. Professor Gerber’s brother lectured about sustainability and it was a very eye opening experience. Talking to other classmates, some did not enjoy the lecture as much as I did. I thought Professor Gerber’s brother demonstrated sustainability in an effective method. It was a somewhat graphic to people who have never been exposed to farm life. I thought that this one person is innovative in so many different ways that even though it is one person, it makes a difference. Solar heating, composting, growing your own vegetables, turkeys, chickens basically covers all components of life. Not only is it going green but also it must decrease the cost of living in general. On Wednesday’s lecture, we learned about mental models. Our current mental model states nature is a machine, and materialism brings us happiness. The new mental model conveys that to understand something people need to see the whole picture, and people belong to the world not
