Emily Leung Weekly Journal #9 April 7 th , 2011 TA: Peter Kaminski During the past week we had two interesting guest lectures come to our class discussing two topics that relate to each other. On Monday, we had a woman come in and talk about giving birth at home. We were then shown a very interesting video of her second child’s birth at home. This video showed her in a pool of water during labor. From what I observed it was a calm birth involving no medicines of any kind and the environment was very tranquil. It was not like what the media portrays birth to be like. In most media forms, birth seems painful, loud, and always in a hospital. This portrayal of birth was the exact opposite. From the reading, “Fish can’t see water: the need to humanize birth” by M. Wagner it discusses how all over the world there are people who are having cesarean operations by choice not for medical emergencies. Also the reading discusses that giving birth in a hospital does not decrease any risks but
