Emily Leung Weekly Journal #3 February 17 th , 2011 TA: Peter Kaminski This week’s lecture discussed the topics of masculinity. The guest speaker was the same speaker from the tobacco lecture. The three readings we had read this week were all about sex and consent to sex. In lecture when Tom Schiff was giving out facts, I learned that there are more males than females that drown in the United States. I thought that it was an interesting fact and something not everyone would assume to be true. Also within the lecture, I learned that men commit 70% of all violent crimes in the United States. All of the facts that were given in lecture on Wednesday were all very shocking yet interesting as well. In lecture we also discussed how males tend to play by the gender role and “act” a certain way to portray the image of “being the man”. This societal gender role definitely affects men because we also were informed that 70% of people on academic probation are men. I believe there is a correlation between the gender role
