Theater App Exam 1 10/20/09 5:51 PM Lecture Notes *Theater - is an event that requires an actor/audience relationship and agreement in a momentary suspension of disbelief of an imaginary circumstance. (Playwrite=WRONG) *Without these people, theater can’t happen: one actor to one audience member -The Play is the physical script on paper -The Production is the manifestation of the script, the actual performance -Actors - create an event that is compelling, we allow ourselves to suspend our disbelief -Cave drawings- earliest tangible evidence of theater, form of storytelling -We need theater because: Education - to teach/gain knowledge, share ideas Entertainment - to escape reality Enlightenment - awareness of our place in our community, seeking something bigger Theater enhances life **Theater is a action not a location *Theater is an event that requires an actor/audience relationship/agreement in a momentary suspension of disbelief of an imaginary circumstance. Live performance (not TV or film) Audience  Actor : Playwright Director Designers

Producers- looks over everything Critics- role is to inform *Actors : What two attributes do actors need? 1.Talent- Develop and nurture their talent, are capable to be great actor 2. Chutzpa- determination, endurance, drive, persistence -2 Realms of Theater: Real World and Training *Real World - Audition Sides- prepared scenes for an audition Prepared Monologues (at an imaginary person or to the audition, outward directed) Soliloquy- expression of an internal struggle 2 tools: 1. Resume - plays, theater and role, age (or I can play from whatever age to whatever), measurements and appearances 2. Headshot - has to look like you, not how you want yourself to look like -Auditions - “What are you looking for?” Physical, Temperament (quality of mind, moodiness) How the person behaves, outside of the audition room -Playwrights are not bound to anything except the text.

-4 th wall: invisible barrier between actor and audience is broken -Aside : when an actor turns and directly addresses the audience what he or she is thinking *Pass dated - is a policy for NY professional theater where an expired ticket can be later used, you can call them the day you want to go and show up that night *Training : A. Voice : resonance, quality of sound, range of sound The actor is only as good as his projection of his voice-his voice should depict what he’s thinking and how he’s feeling B. Body : developing a vessel that will hold on emotional life in a freely expressed way C. Emotional Life
