Adam Samaan Free Response 2005 #4 ANWR a) The United States would have 500 days worth of oil resources from the ANWR supply. b) Two characteristics of artic tundra that make it fragile are slow growth and shallow thin soils. Slow growth makes it susceptible to damage from human impacts because the recovery rates are slow with slow growth. Shallow thin soils are easily compacted and therefore loss of integrity. c) Two activities that are associated with the ANWR petroleum resources are construction and use of roadways and housing facilities. Both of these activities reduce food sources and shelter for the species living in this area d) Two major end uses are transportation and heating. A conservation measure for both of these end uses would be to drive less and use heating less often or turning down the thermostat. 2004 #2 West Fremont, coal burning plant a) 96,000,000 kWh/year b) 24,000,000 kWh/year c) These numbers are different because households could be using alternative energy resources such as wind or solar power. d)
