Alloys are metals which have impurities purposely (different atoms). When added to a metal ththey form a solid solution. The solute is the one that has less and the sovent is the host atoms. When the two are mixed together two defects can happen: substutional and interstitial. There are some basic things they must have in order for this to happen(defect substitutional or interstitial) otherwise they will form a lattice distortion. these are: the radius must be about the same( 15% or less the size of the host atom) same crystal structures, both very electronegativity and the solute has a higher valency. (if these aren’t true there will be a substantial lattice distortion) Weight percent is a way of describing the concentration of an atom in an alloy.(composition Dislocation- lineatr defect( misalignement) edge dislocation – For interfacial defects grain boundaries the enrgy is lower for in large grains because there is less
