10-19 Lecture Notes- Deck Motivation “Management is nothing more than motivating people” –Lee Iacocca Motivation is a function of three elements: 1. Effort- how hard you work at something. A measure of intensity 2. Direction- where your focus is directed 3. Persistence- ongoing level of effort towards the direction Interaction between a person and a situation “Motivation is that art of getting people to do what you want them to do because they want to do it” –Dwight D. Eisenhower Motivation is not about forcing people to do things. Get them to want to do it Understanding human behavior Higher order needs will not motivate people as long as lower level needs remain unsatisfied o This is about Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs A satisfied need is not an effective motivator The manager’s first step- understanding individuals’ needs Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory Hygiene factors- reduce dissatisfaction Motivators- lead to satisfaction Job Characteristics Model (page 388 in the book)
