Yontii Wheeler BISC 012 The Wrong Blood Transfusion: Hypertonic blood cells mean that the amount of solutes outside the cell is greater than inside and therefore the amount of free water molecules outside the cell is fewer than the amount outside so water travels out of the cell, and the blood cells will shrink or crenation. This means there is an increased volume of water in the blood surrounding the red blood cells and this could cause edema. This means there will be more water in the blood and when the blood travels through the renal artery into the afferent arteriole of the glomerulus. This is where filtration occurs and the blood pressure forces fluid from the blood in the glomerulus into the Bowman’s capsule where it travels through the proximal tubule, loop of Henle, distal tubule, and collecting duct and out of the body. Therefore, the urine will be diluted because there will be more water in the blood, and that water will then diffuse into the filtrate by the pressure placed on the glomerulus by the blood pressure.
