Yontii Wheeler Ashley Mills Chem 012 Lab Sec. 38 Three-Week Lab Experiment: 365 and 366 Write Up Sample contained: copper, nickel, and calcium Confirming Copper In order to precipitate group II cations, I had to make sure my unknown solution was a pH of 0.5+/- 0.3. After the pH was within the appropriate range, thioacetamide was added and the precipitate was a dark brown/black color. Next, the test tube is placed in a hot water bath. After 10 minutes in the bath, the supernatant liquid was light blue and the precipitate was a dark brown or black. Due to this color, it was determined that the solution did not contain tin or cadmium however it could still contain either bismuth or copper. KOH was added, and the precipitate remained black. After adding HCl, there was still a dark precipitate so HNO 3 was added and the solution was heated. This turned the solution a dark blue however when NH 3 was added next, the supernatant liquid turned a dark blue, indicating the presence of copper and there was no precipitate or residue. This meant copper was the only ion fro experiment 365.
