The Power of Verbal and Nonverbal Communication in the Work Place 1. Why is conscious verbal and nonverbal communication so important in the work place? Conscious verbal and nonverbal communications are important in the workplace because they help you establish your workplace identity. These two are how we communicate with others, and others have an impact on your identity. Being conscious of this allows us to do our best in the workplace. 2. Explain the following terms and offer examples. Clarity vs. ambiguity o Clarity is providing messages in the clearest way. Ambiguity is providing messages in unclear terms or opening them to multiple interpretations. Upward communication o Communication that occurs between you and anyone higher than you in an organization hierarchy. Downward communication o Communication that occurs between you and anyone lower then you in an organization hierarchy. Inclusive messages o Democratic way of communicating, taking to account all the differences within the group you are communicating with. Exclusive messages o Autocratic way of communicating that reveals a me-oriented way of behavior. Supportive messages o Supportive messages communicate concern and respect for others and indicate cooperation Nonsupportive messages
