Unit 2 Exam Class Notes 02/09/2009 11:17:00 A. Language Source of most communication problems. We think in language B. Language is arbitrary and symbolic Human creation Symbolic – meaning symbol code.  Words stand in for stuff.  Could be coded other ways. Words merely represent things…they are not the things they represent. The Semantic Triangle.   o Word-phrase symbols  Angle 1 Symbol – what we use to evoke the  referent.   o Reflection though reference  Angle 2 Reflection or thought, incurs inside the human mind. o Object-thing referent  Angle 3 Referent – the object or the thing to which you refer when you use the word. o Dashed line at bottom = you can’t get from the symbol to the referent or from the  referent to symbol.  Must travel through reference point. o Meanings are in people, not in words. People’s experience become associated with the word. o Someone getting attacked by a dog when they were 5 years old. Audit the feedback so you can do a better job communicating.
