Fitness Levels Among Children &  Youth WHO estimates that 30-45 million children worldwide  are obese 155 million = overweight Various studies have shown skinfold test data on  youth indicating a moderately  high  range for boys &  girls Average scores for 1-mile run-walk test:     - many girls did more walking than running     - many boys & girls could do no better than slowly         jogging for that distance

Activity Patterns Among Children  & Youth Physical activity reaches a peak at age 11,  then declines through teen years Reasons for decline:    -  opportunities to participate decrease    -  no longer fun?    -  interested in other things Decline during teen years is serious problem-  that’s when adult habits begin to form

Fastest-growing age group are those 75  years and older Signs indicate that older citizens are  becoming more active This will be an important research field for the  future and is already an important direction  for fitness professionals

Fitness & Physical Activity for  People with Disabilities Historically programs have been  strongly focused on rehabilitation New model = Inclusion & Integration Many barriers for disabled:    -  access    -  fatigue due to disability    -  health problems due to sedentary        lifestyles

Many fitness programs are  developed & conducted by  uncertified personnel!!! Education-B.S. or Master’s Degree in  Exercise Science  Don’t have certifications Pay $$ and get certifications    on the web!

What is certification? “Is a process by which an individual, institution,  or educational program is evaluated and  recognized as meeting certain predetermined  standards through successful completion of a  valid & reliable examination”

At present, the various exercise science  certifications are largely unregulated Currently no single organization to establish  professional standards No board-certified specialties for the sub- disciplines of exercise science Currently at least 50 organizations nationally  offering more than 400 different certifications!
