Earth as a closed system *****System-  components that function together  but also work independently  collectively that do some job or perform a certain task Important characteristics: That they have boundaries Organized in a systematic way Defined by a function Open System- Can accept energy  inputs and allows energy outputs  Example: sun Matter  moved in and out of the system Closed System- Can accept energy inputs and allows energy outputs No matter can be exchanged EARTH IS A CLOSED SYSTEM Nothing on earth that is simply linear Everything on earth has to be cycled Examples in the environment: Water cycle
