Axia College Material Appendix F Healthy Interpersonal Relationships Worksheet Use your textbook to answer the following questions. You are not required to respond in essay format. You may use short-answer responses, including lists, to answer these questions. 1. What are the characteristics of intimate relationships? What are behavioral interdependence, need fulfillment, emotional attachment, and emotional availability? Why is each important in relationship development? The characteristics of intimate relationships are behavioral interdependence, need fulfillment, emotional attachment, and emotional availability. Donatelle (2009) identifies behavioral interdependence as “the mutual impact that people have on each other as their lives and daily activities intertwine. What one person does influences what the other person wants to do and can do” (p. 117). Emotional attachment , according to Donatelle (2009), is articulated as being “feelings of love” (p. 117). In discerning this particular characteristic, Donatelle (2009) highlights intimacy , which, according to her, is not solely of sexual derivation entirely, although “sex can play an important role in emotional attachment” (p. 117). A relationship may have a tendency to be sexual, but even if there is an apparent absence of sexual activity, this bond can still be intimate. “Two people can be emotionally intimate (share feelings) or spiritually intimate (share spiritual beliefs and meanings), or they can be intimate friends ” (Donatelle, 2009, p. 117). When psychological needs are being fulfilled by intimate relationships, this is truncated to mean need fulfillment . Via relationships with other people, we fulfill our requisite for the following: Intimacy - someone with whom we can share our feelings freely Social integration – someone with whom we can share worries and concerns Nurturance - someone whom we can take care of and who will take care of us
