May 7, 2009 Memorandum To: Dr. O From: Team # [names] Subject: Ross Street Reconstruction Project, Final Memo Summary: We did an initial site inspection to assess the magnitude of the damage of Ross Street. We found that there was a pipeline failure, numerous potholes, curb damage, and overuse of the Road. All of these things contributed to the possible reason for road failure. The pipeline probably broke because of the weak soil surrounding the pipe. When the ground becomes saturated erosion can cause pipes to bend due to the uneven ground pressure. As the saturated soil eroded away, the pavement on Ross Street therefore sank in specific locations along the path of the pipeline. These sinkholes formed a potentially dangerous situation for public use of the road as the holes continued to sink deeper and deeper than the initial pavement elevation. Also, the road has not been repaired from these damages, and the saturated soil underground has proven too weak to be able to successfully bear the weight of the vehicles passing across the road.
