For this question you should refer to the energy level diagrams of Figure 9.11; assume that the ions have the same energy level diagram as the parent homonuclear diatomic. (a) For each of the species C + 2 , N - 2 , F + 2 and NO + , (i) tell which MO’s are occupied (and their occupancy), (ii) determine the bond order (and state whether you expect the ion to be stable or unstable), and (iii) state whether the ion is paramagnetic or diamagnetic. For NO + assume that its MO’s fill in the same order as in O 2 . (b) A group of experimentalists believe that they have detected a species NeF x , where x = - 1 , 0 or +1. Assume that the MO’s of F 2 most closely approximate this system, what value of x is most likely (i.e. most stable)? (c) Lewis theory does an adequate job of explaining an ionic compound like K 2 O, but is quite unsatisfactory at rationalizing the existence of KO 2 and K 2 O 2 .
