Reading 4 Moving beyond white guilt How we can defuse the negative aspects of guilt -get info: learn about racism (live free of blinders and be filled with true self-respect) -do something: antidote to guilt is action -listen: listen when someone of color says its racist -talk: undoing racism can’t be done alone; find others who share the goal; seek converts -measure our commitment by how many white people we are willing to talk to about racism Back to the past -collective guilt our race bares for centuries; like to ignore the massive mess -slavery and genocide part of aspect of white racism (roots in them) Finding our heroes and sheroes -anti-racist work has been buried too -a lot of social justice was due to minority white women and men and they don’t get credit -these whites wrote personal stories, fiction, and poems about experiences(few of which are not written by the winners) Moving on -listening to past is 1 st step turns collective guilt into collective accountability -2 nd is collective responsibility
