Symbol                Stands for                Referent (object; thing)  (Word)          (an imputed relation) No word or symbol is related to any object without the human mind Language is a code composed of symbols Imperfect Words can bring a good feeling and a state of mind Emotional valences occur They can be visual symbols Logos or signs – the flag If we use symbols carelessly we take something away from them We don’t get to choose the meaning that other people interpret a symbol with The Confederate Flag – some people like it others think its racist 2. Language has rules Semantic rules – rules that govern meaning Grammatical rules – determines how a symbol can be used Syntactic rules –  Syntax will influence how we construct our minds 3. Reality is shaped by language

People who speak English think logically and linearly People who spoke Classical Latin could piece things together based on their language  structure Without language there would be no negative You can’t think negative thoughts Without language there would be no Ten Commandments 4. Language organizes and classifies reality The affect of words and how they create reality The names we have for things begin to constitute in our minds (What we call something  has a big influence) Terrorist vs. Freedom Fighters Framing theory – George Lac…. Frames are structures that develop in our minds that are made up of a series of
