Soils as a porous medium
Solids, Liquids, and Gaseous Phases The soil as a porous medium consists of three phases that are dynamic and interrelated in composition. A mineral soil can consist of the following composition : a) Solid phase constitutes the soil matrix (clay minerals, organic matter) 50% b) Liquid phase, consists of soil water and dissolved substances (soil solution) 25%

The Gaseous Phase The gaseous phase or soil atmosphere Soil variables are bulk density, water content, and gaseous content. The soil matrix controls the form, quantity, and distribution of the liquid and gaseous phases . N 2 % O 2 % CO 2 % Air 79 20.97 0.03 Soil 79.20 20.60 0.20
5 Volume Fractions of the 3 phases a) Total porosity f = V f /V t = [V a +V w ]/V t b) Air filled porosity f a = V a /V t c) Water filled porosity θ v = V w /V t d) Water saturation s = V w /V f Therefore total porosity is equal to : f = f a + θ v Volume fraction of solids equals: 1 – f = [ ρ b / ρ s ] = V s /V t
