Darryl Williams C. Liegh McInnis ENG 105-06 10 March 2010 Composition Literature Mid-Term Examination: Part 1 1. Based on the lecture given in class, list, define, and discuss the steps to succeed in college and life. The three steps to succeeding in college are: develop a plan; develop a personal character; and develop effective study habits. Developing a plan involves a self examination so one can learn what things about them they need to improve. One also has to define success in education. One needs to know the difference between being educated and being trained. Developing a plan also involves examining your university to see what resources are there to help you. Finally, one needs to examine their professional field to learn what steps they need to take to be capable of working well in that field. Developing a personal character is the second step to succeed in college. One needs to become responsible and dedicated to their work. This means one might have to do things when they do not feel like it. One needs focus and urgency when they are developing personal character. This means one needs to have priorities. The last step is developing effective study habits. Sometimes studying alone is not enough so one should seek help whenever it is needed. One also needs to refrain from lying to one’s self. Do not tell yourself things like “I’ll study later” when you know you probably will not. 2. Based on the lecture given in class, list, define, and discuss the ten steps to improve college reading and writing. 1. Understanding terms in context is learning how to determine the meaning of a word based on how it is used in a sentence through context clues such as: examples, synonyms, antonyms, and a general sense of the sentence passage. 2. Discovering the main idea is important, because it is the treasure that must be discovered to achieve reading. 3.
