Diamond Cubic and Zinc Blende Crystals [9 pts] Two important semiconductor materials are silicon, which has the diamond cubic crystal structure, and GaAs, which has the zinc blende structure. i) How are these structures similar and how do they differ from one another? ii) How many atoms are there per unit cell and what is the coordination number for each structure? iii) Given the lattice parameter for GaAs is a = 0.5654 nm, what is the density? 2. Electron in a periodic potential [30 pts] (a) Draw the Kronig-Penney model (potential, V , vs. x ) for the periodic potential for a 1D crystal made of up atoms with loosely bound electrons (i.e. the 5s electrons in Cs).
