MSE 250 LAB. # 3 Mechanical Testing #1 –Tensile Testing Purpose: Mechanical properties are critical when one wanted to use material for specific structural applications. In the prior experiment, we obtain hardness of a metal using Rockwell tester. Although this simple test gives estimated tensile strength, but it is only on the surface. In additional, tensile strength is not the only mechanical data of interest to many structural applications. Other properties such as yield strength, strain at failure, toughness, etc. must also be considered. To obtain these properties, one needs to a full “Stress-Strain” Curve. In this lab, we will obtain the load-displacement curves which can then be converted to the “stress-strain” curve. In addition, we will examine five most common types of stress-strain curves with different materials Materials and Methods: Materials to be considered: 70-30 Cu-Zn Brass (Cartridge Brass) Galvanized sheet steel Tough Polymer – Polypropylene
