Suneet Bhansali Dancing Skeletons Recitation Yellow Fever, Black Goddess This novel detailed the effects of plagues and other diseases in Belén, a town near the city of Iquitos in eastern Peru. Wills discusses the outbreak of cholera in this town and how it spread due to the attractiveness of Belén. People from around the region visit this shantytown and its floating homes and water-based society. Like Dettwyler, Wills also interviews natives of this town to better understand the culture and people. Wilma is a nurse in Belén who encountered the first case of cholera in a market. Similar to many diseases in third world countries, it was known that cholera kills by dehydration but may also lead to brain and kidney failure. Wills also took data samples and did case studies to see the effects of cholera on the people of Belén. In this section, Wills also discusses how people have been changing the environment in ways that have led to the extinction of several species and how this has eventually become correlated with the spread and growth of diseases.
