Richard Duong MCRO 251 Lab 2 November 2010 Week 9 Pre-Lab Purpose: Four new exercises will be imposed in this experiment, each testing different properties of microorganisms. The first two exercises will be to differentiate gram positive cells into either staphylococci or streptococci through a catalase test, and then a coagulase test. The third exercise will be the identification of different catalase negative streptococci by looking at four tests. Finally, the last exercise is to investigate the normal microorganisms found in the throat. Procedure 1. Complete charts and observe specimens from last week’s experiment. Catalase Test 1. Use a loop to remove some bacterial growth from previously inoculated slant and smear onto microscope. 2. Carefully add one drop of hydrogen peroxide in a way to prevent contamination of the dropper. a. The organism will produce rapid and vigorous bubbling if the organism produces catalase 3. Record results and discard slides appropriately. Cagulase Test to Identify
