My P. Le WG211 – JP2011 Reaction Paper for “The Tombs of Atuan” “The Tombs of Atuan” is the second of a series of books written by Ursula K. Le Guin and set in her fantasy archipelago of “Earthsea”, first published in 1971. As I read “The Tomb of Atuan”, I felt negative most of the times. Since Tenar was born, it seemed to me that she was chosen to suffer. Her mother tried vainly to save her from her “fate” once, but failed and was helpless and too desperate to try anything else again. Her father didn’t even raise a finger to save her; he even consider her as a useless good which no one would pay for when they came to claim it. This made me furious when I realized even blood relation didn’t give the women any value or meaning to the men; and women’s power to protect themselves and other women seemed hopeless. “Only women can serve Gods” – this notion brings me uneasy feelings. As described in the book, the Gods were all men, so why can only women serve them? Some might think that women had power in this notions; as people for centuries had dreamt of being able to connect to Gods, to understand what they want and predict what they will do; so as only women were able to serve Gods, it should have been an honor for them. However, to me this is a terrifying fact which indicates the notion “Gods are Men, so Men are Gods”. Only women could serve Gods, meaning that women had to serve men. The Holly Land, the island of Atuan, seemed to me as a prison that trapped women for eternity, taking away their youth, their strength, their freedom and their soul – which were what women had to sacrifice for men in ancient times. Little Tenar and other young maidens, besides their ritual practices, had to spend all their day working. They had to spin and weave the wool, plant and harvest the food; and these were no difference than housewife’s
