PREFACE Right in this moment when I’m writing these words, the sequence of events that took place during the making of this project, is moving around my eyes like a film strip. It was last November when I started studying the idea of making a data acquisition system that can bring revolution in the world of automation. At last I found my base and discussed it with my group members who equally declared it as good enough to be chosen as a final year project. Right from that day, we are working on this project, studying it, designing it, simulating it, implementing it and finally reporting it here in this document. STIM is a device that has got its concept from the IEEE P1451 family of standards. The main idea was to change the way the communication takes place between management level and machine level. We do face a number of challenges as we did not have any working example in front of us to start from. Thanks to “Proteus”, great and versatile simulation software that helps us to simulate almost each and every aspect of our system without even implementing it on the hardware. So we should also say thanks to “Labcenter Electronics” for producing such a wonderful software package. We have tried to develop a system that is network independent. The company doesn’t need to change its current infrastructure at all while enjoying the benefits obtained from this system. We do admit that we are leaving this system into its end-beginning stage. We have also provided some help in this report for those who want to work upon this idea in the future. It is important that the reader should have general knowledge of Industrial Electronics as well as general serial communication protocols. We hope that this report will prove to be helpful to everyone....
