The operations of ABC must undergo changes to increase their productivity and innovation to match or beat their competition. The management style of ABC lends itself to adaptation and change but the operational side must change and adapt. There are two major components to the manufacturing operations of ABC Corporation: the people that perform the processes and the technology that is used to do so. The interaction of the people with each other and their interactions with the technological processes are the key components that must be managed correctly if ABC is to gain on its competition. The sociotechnical systems (STS) approach “has become an increasingly popular organization design tool for examining and changing the workplace environment” (Shani, Grant, Thompson, & Krishnan, 1992). STS emphasizes several innovations that will help ABC transform and improve their operations. Among them are self-managing work teams, self- inspection for quality, group-based reward systems, and information sharing mechanisms.
