The word ÒdimensionÓ is used in physics to refer to the physical nature of a quantity. For example, length is a dimension - as is time. The word ÒunitsÓ, on the other hand, refers to the specific standard used to make a measurement. Length may be measured in units of meters or in units of feet. Although both measurements have dimension of length, we may not add a measurement in feet to a measurement in meters without first making a conversion of one of the two measurements.11. Two vectors add to zero when they have the same magnitude but opposite direction. This condition is satisfied by vectors A and D, as well as by vectors C and D.16. For the vector equation A+B=C, the length of C depends on the orientation of the vectors A and B relative to each other. In order for C to be related to lengths A and B through the Pythagorean Theorem, C2=A2+B2, the vector addition (or stacking) of vectors A and B must produce a right triangle (since the Pythagorean Theorem only applies to right triangles). This means that B must be perpendicular to A.17. If the vector A has length 3 and the vector B has length 4, then the only way these vectors can be stacked in vector addition to yield a resultant vector C of length C=A+B=7 is if A and B are colinear (pointing in the same direction).Chapter 1, Problems:4.
