Darryl Williams Dr. Kathi Griffin ENG 205-09 15 October 2010 Critical Analysis of “Torn Lace” “Torn Lace” is a short story written by Emilia Pardon Bazan, a Spanish author. The purpose of this story is to understand why a soon-to-be bride decides not to go through with the wedding. The topic is the author describing a wedding to which she could not attend then having a conversation with the bride afterwards. The intended audience for this piece is the people that attended the wedding and wanted to know why the bride called off the wedding. The narrator did not attend the wedding because the way she describes the wedding from her imagination is probably better than how it actually was. Additionally, her use of imagery sets the tone for the beginning of the story. The bride did not tell others why she cancelled the wedding, because “of

When her fianc saw what happened his face contorted and disfigured by the most vivid rage. At that moment, the bride had an epiphany that lead her to realize that her fiancs true self was a cruel man and the bride could not see herself with such a man not then, not ever. This event explains the storys title, Torn Lace, because that is basically the cause of the failed wedding. The brides reason for calling off the wedding is somewhat ridiculous, because this was the first time she saw her fianc mad. He had a good reason to be angered, because the lace was a family heirloom. Just because he got mad that one time does not mean he was naturally an angry person....
