ENV 4561 Fall 2011 Homework #1 Assigned: August 24, 2011 Due: September 1, 2011 1. A WTP plant operator is trying to size a pump that takes water from a WTP holding tank and sends it to a house on a hill above the plant. The operator’s goal is to have 45 psi of water pressure entering the house. The operator knows that the head loss (major + minor) from the holding reservoir to the pump is six times the velocity head in the 4-inch diameter pipe, and the head loss from the pump to the house is eleven times the velocity head of the pipe. If the pressure head at the inlet of the pump is – 7 ft (notice that is a negative!) and the velocity head entering the house is the same as the velocity head in the pipe at the pump, determine what pressure head is needed from the pump to achieve the operator’s goal of 45 psi of water pressure.
