2) Explain what Gans means by an “enduring value” in US news, and describe one that he does not discuss. Describe news items or other media content that demonstrate this value, and explain how we “infer” this value in news or entertainment programming. Gans defines enduring values as, “values which can be found in many different types of news stories over a long period of time; often they affect what events become news, for some are part and parcel of the definition of news. Enduring values are not timeless, and they may change somewhat over the years; moreover, they also help to shape opinions, and many times, opinions are only specifications of enduring values” (41). As Gans points out, often times US news values the order of the upper-class and upper-middle class sectors of society over the order of the ordinary or lower class people (61). Although it may seem unfair that the news favors the values of the elites, it is often in the best interest of society for the news to value the order of the elites over the ordinary and lower classes.
