Unformatted text preview: Dana Coen COMM 546 (History of American Screenwriting) Spring, 2010 Lecture #12 FROM POSTMODERN TO POSTMORTEM Recap : At the dawn of the 90s, The Sundance Film Festival and the independent film movement.... ...serve to fuel each others success. Out of this emerges the independent, writer/director auteur. Two of the most successful are Spike Lee and the Coen Brothers.... ...who have an instinct for using the media to promote their projects. The Coen brothers dabble in postmodernism. But Quentin Tarantinos honorariums to the films that have influenced him.... ...takes it to a new level... ...and helps Miramax become the most successful independent film company of the decade. An alternate reaction to Tarantinos whimsically violent films.... 2 ...brings a host of successful literary adaptations and actor- driven indies to the screen. But the soaring profits of Hollywood commercial releases attracts screenwriter Joe Eszterhas.... ...who transforms himself from journeyman screenwriter to Hollywood insider. But this only adds a flood of middling scripts into a marketplace.... 3 ...that is already wary of paying high prices for specs that might not earn back their investment. At the same time Sundance is suffering from too much Hollywood energy. Even Stephen Soderbergh...the festivals earliest success story...cant resist the pressure to go commercial. At the beginning of the new millennium Hollywood has...for the most part...gobbled up the independent film movement.... ....and screenwriters, in general, still remain unknown to the general public. Present : Show photo of George W. Bush. With the election of George W. Bush in 2000, neo-cons take control of not only the White House...but the bully pulpit . Violent and sexual content comes under attack from the right. And Reagan-era notions of corporate control and top-down-economics are expanded. But Hollywood studios ward off the opposition by combining the issues . They employ free-speech arguments to resist attacks on content.......
