Tragic realization/catharsis o The hero, alone and willdul, asserts his or her intellect and energy against the ultimate mysteries of an imperfect world. o Even though they try hard and fail, we still like them when in the end they fall Tragedy o Greek drama has Peripetia Catharsis o Puropse passion, perception Begins with a purpose Then the path becomes tangled and the hero has troubles and then we see the passion Perception of the truth Oedipus o Exposition The city is beset by a plague Oedipus solved the riddle of the sphinx o Suspense Creon returns from consulting the oracle Oedipus berates Tieresias for being blind Oedipus is suspicious of Creon Iokaste warns Oedipus not to listen to oracles Sending for the Sheppard o Rising action First oracle Laos finds out his son will kill him and marry his wife Second oracle Oedipus going to consult, goes because his parents aren’t his real parents.
