Given Circumstances 23:09 Time Time of Composition Time writer lived in Conditions of era, place of play within body of author’s work Time of the Action Exact time, season, and year in which the action is set Be aware of the entire dramatic situation Reinforce conflicts among the character and inform the creative work of designers Dramatic Time Total of the time that passes during the on-stage action plus the time during intervals  between acts and scenes Place - physical environment General Locale The country, region, or district in which the action is set Playwrights choose general locales to evoke emotional associations as well as for  realism and authenticity Specific Locale Particular place in which the stage action occurs Identify, possibly emotionalize Society A closed system is an assembly of objects in the state of isolation form the outside  environment Play show social groups living together under a closed system, too; closed because the  playwright has isolated society of the play from the world of objective reality. Society - closed social system of the play, which influences the characters’ behavior and  environment Interest in the family leads to writing realistic plays dealing with personal and private  subjects, while interest in social groups outside the family leads to nonrealistic forms  that treat public subjects Families Most common social group
