Steven Eannarino Drama 120- M. Perry Thesis Statement In making his character’s desires deep but actions foolish, Oscar Wilde satirizes upper Victorian society in the late 1800’s. 1.Jack and Algernon eat muffins when they should be concerned about Gwendolyn and Cecily. Jack: “How can you sit there, calmly eating muffins when we are in this horrible trouble, I can’t make out.” Algernon: “Well, I can’t eat muffins in an agitated manner. The butter would probably get on my cuffs. One should always eat muffins quite calmly.” [Later] Algernon: “When I am in trouble, eating is the only thing that quite consoles me…” Jack: “Well, there’s no reason why you should eat them all in that greedy way.” What better example of a deep-rooted desire and a foolish action than this- Jack and Algernon lose their women, two girls whom they are madly in love with, and the way they deal with losing them is by eating and more so, talking about eating, muffins. Jack and Algernon’s strongest intentions are to marry Gwendolyn and Cecily. Yet, rather than
