A CTIVITY 4 – R ISK T ERMS AND D EFINITION O BJECTIVE Identify the components of risk management T IME 20 Minutes T ASKS 1. Define each of the following terms: inherent risk, threat, threat source, vulnerability, likelihood, impact, and residual risk. Answer: Inherent risk - The level of risk before security measure are applied Threat - Natural, environmental, or human event that could cause harm Threat source - (1) intent and method targeted at the intentional exploitation of a vulnerability, such as criminal groups, terrorists, botnet operators, and disgruntled employees, or (2) a situation and method that may accidentally trigger a vulnerability such as an undocumented process, severe storm, and accidental or unintentional behavior. Vulnerability - A weakness that could be exploited by a threat Likelihood of occurrence - a weighted factor or probability that a given threat is capable of exploiting a given vulnerability (or set of vulnerabilities) Impact - The magnitude of harm Residual risk - The level of risk after security measures are applied multiplied
