Week 20 104 Laboratory Activity 18 Heats of Solutions and Reactions Ful±lls AP ® Chemistry Lab Requirement Introduction In Laboratory Activity 18 you will compare experimental and theoretical enthalpy changes for several processes. This lab does not follow the scienti±c method, but the goal is to get 5% error or less on each experiment. It will be helpful to remember that 1 calorie = 4.184 Joules of energy. Methods Equipment: digital balance, weighing dish, mortar and pestle, thermometer, styrofoam cups (2), 100 mL graduated cylinder, glass stir rod, cardboard square to cover foam cups, CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics for ΔH° values, safety glasses. Chemicals: Potassium Nitrate (KNO 3 ), distilled water, 1.0 M NaOH, 1.0 M HCl, Magnesium (Mg) ribbon, distilled water. Procedure: Refer to video lab. Record your data below. Experiment 1: Dissolving Potassium Nitrate in Water Determine theoretical ΔH° solution in units of cal/mole: KNO
