When a “stress” is applied in the ±orm o± an increase or decrease in pH, the reaction shi±ts to relieve the stress, causing a change in color. Acid-base indicators change color over specifc pH ranges, and it is because o± this specifcity that indicators are used to estimate the pH o± unknown concentrations. Knowing the pH o± an acid or base solution is help±ul in determing the equilibrium constant, K a . For a weak acid mixed with water, the reversible reaction is usually o± the ±orm HA + H 2 O H 3 O + + A - and K a =[H 3 O + ][A - ]/[HA] I± we know the pH o± a weak acid solution, then we can determine H 3 O + , because pH=-log[H 3 O + ] Also, we can assume that [H 3 O + ]=[A - ], and i± we know [HA], then we can determine K
