Ryan Hayes Critical Essay 2 Yeboah Compare and contrast the concept of family in the USA and SSA. To what extent does family negatively impact development in SSA? The family values between the USA and SSA are different in multiple ways. Values combined with lack of technology in the region have brought negative impacts in SSA. As we go into the types of things that go into a family, we see that there are many distinctions between the two regions. In terms of lineage, the US family is bilateral and SSA is unilateral with either a patrilineal or a matrilineal system. This means that the USA traces their family through both parents, while SSA traces family through either the father or the mother. Through the patrilineal system, or family being traced through the father in a society like the Masai, includes pastoral societies that use cattle as their wealth. Matrilineal is traced through the mother, who is the cultivator and uses land as her wealth. The Ashanti are good examples of an ethnic group who trace their family through the mother. The type of family in each region is also quite different.
