Take Control of Junk Food to Defeat the Obesity Epidemic in America Yontii Wheeler Professor Tamara Henry Date: October 27, 2011 The obesity epidemic in America is growing more and more serious every year. Many children are developing Type II diabetes and other health problems due to being overweight or obese. Early health problems among children continue into their adulthood to create a workforce of adults who are unable to perform at certain standards, decrease our country’s stability and economic productivity, and raise health care costs. i There are certain steps the government can take in order to combat this epidemic. One option is government regulation of junk food. Regulating junk food could include a junk food tax, keeping junk food out of vending machines in schools, and decreasing the amount of ad exposure about junk food kids receive. Government regulation of junk food could drastically decrease the number of people eating junk food and therefore affect their rates of obesity and overweight. ii Government regulation is one of the most effective ways of taking control of a growing problem in the United States. Currently, 33.8% of U.S. adults and about 17% of children and adolescents (2-9 years old) are obese. iii
