Government Mandate of the HPV Vaccine: Saving Lives Yontii Wheeler Professor Tamara Henry Due Date: September 29, 2011 The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States. 1 There are over 100 strains of the virus but 30 types can cause cervical cancer and genital warts . 1 In 2006, the FDA approved a vaccine for young girls that protects against 4 strains of the HPV. 1 Two of those strains are attributed to 70% of the cases of cervical cancer and the other two cause 90% of the cases of genital warts. 1 The HPV vaccine, if mandated by state legislature for girls and young women, could prevent the transmission of the most dangerous strains of HPV and save a substantial amount of women from developing cervical cancer. Although the majority of the strains of HPV are harmless, the few that are not, could be extremely detrimental and life threatening to the females that contract them. 10,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year and over 6 million are diagnosed with HPV. 2 Data shows that when people are not forced to get vaccinated, they are less likely to do it, even if they don’t oppose it for personal reasons.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
