Native American Language and Culture Anthropology 169 Yontii Wheeler Native American Language and Culture Notes September 2, 2009 stereotypes are dehumanizing whether good or bad opposite of reality or true for the most part Native American Stereotypes: 1. drink a lot/ drunks 2. passive 3. easily deceived 4. quiet 5. serious/solemn 6. primitive 7. savages 8. mysterious, mystical 9. spiritual 10.kind/giving 11. lazy 12.poor health 13.unintelligent 14.live of the land 15.believe in many Gods 16.secluded 17.wears feathers 18.poor 19.traditional Joking or having a sense of Humor: a way of life, important cultural element, a way of venting or reducing tension/stress, enables you to live under circumstances you should- n’t have to live in Trickster: important Native American figure establishes balance when things are unbalanced Humor: Philosophical and religious undertaking of Native Americans Apaches: belonged to the Athabaskan: a linguistic term that means they speak the athabaskan language 3rd to last to come from Asia settled in Alaska and w./N.W. Canada 700-800 years ago some Athabaskan migrated to Arizona, N. Mexico, Colorado, and Utah Split into 2 groups: Navajo an Apaches Navajo: Apaches of the bean field, had irrigation systems and lived in a prosperous area which helped them to be organized as human beings Villages were pretty far apart
